Frequently Asked Questions

  1. What is a Holistic Nutritionist?

A holistic nutritionist focuses on the whole person: diet, lifestyle, emotional, spiritual and mental health of the client. We address areas of imbalance with a natural approach. We guide the client into healthier habits that include whole foods, exercise and movement, spiritual practices, and emotional wellbeing.

  1. What should I expect when working with a Holistic Nutritionist?

When I work with clients, I take a deep dive into their health history and symptomology. I spend several hours studying your intake form and gathering as much information as possible before our first meeting. After the initial consult, I will make dietary recommendations, and possibly supplement recommendations or lifestyle changes. At times, Functional Medicine lab tests may be suggested to narrow in the cause of your issues. Instead of treating your symptoms with a pharmaceutical, I find the root cause of your issue, and help you fix it so you can enjoy your best health possible!

  1. What kind of diet do you recommend for people?

There are many kinds of diets out there, from vegan to paleo, to keto to macrobiotic. I don’t have one specific type of diet I recommend for everyone, because everyone is different! It’s very important to look at each person as the unique individual they are. I take a deep dive into health history, symptoms, goals, budgetary concerns and personal preferences. No matter which dietary approach we utilize, it will always have a foundation in nutrient density. No matter what ails you, a focus on whole, fresh foods full of vitamins, minerals, and phytonutrients are key.

  1. What is a Building Biologist?

A Building Biologist assesses a person’s home or workplace (or anywhere they spend a lot of time) for anything that could cause health problems. A Building Biologist may be trained in two different areas of study.

1. Air Quality. The air we breathe has a tremendous effect on our health, good or bad. Our bodies aren’t designed to deal with the overload of chemicals that we bring into our homes: chemically based cleaning products, the 100’s of chemicals in our carpets and furniture, flame-retardants in our mattresses and clothing, etc. A Building Biologist will test for these chemicals and help you identify how clean the air is in your home.

Additionally, we will assess your home for any water damage or potential areas of concern where mold can grow. Mold illness is very serious and can be life-threatening. We utilize a number of different techniques to assess your risk and test your air quality for mold exposure.  There are many other areas we look at when evaluation your air quality; combustible gas products, ventilation, allergens, ion balance, and more.

2.EMF’s (electromagnetic fields).   More and more people are beginning to notice health problems that stem from their electronic usage. Building Biologists’ use professional equipment to analyze your exposure and help you reduce the amount of radiation that you’re exposed to.

  1. Is it really that dangerous to use a cell phone or Wi-Fi? There is a lot of scientific research online that says it’s safe.

We get this question all the time! If you do a quick google search about the safety of your cell phone, you’ll come up with pages of blogs and websites assuring you that the ‘data says’ there is no harm from your phone or Wi-Fi.

The problem with this conclusion, is that the data being evaluated, is not relevant to the actual question. The communications industry has funded numerous studies over the years to ensure their customers that their devices are safe. They mostly use the Specific Absorption Rate (SAR) to gauge whether or not their products have any biological impact. SAR evaluates how much tissue is being heated by a certain device. They have established many times over that the thermal effect of their devices is benign.

The problem here is that they’re not studying the actual mechanism of action that is causing the negative biological impact. In other words, the body is impacted by the exposure to radiation which has nothing to do with the SAR rating. Hundreds of independent studies have shown a clear relationship between wireless communication devices and health problems. Unfortunately, its up to the consumer to wade through the industry funded studies, and the independent research. If you’d like to look through some of the science for yourself, see this article from our website: What Does the Science Say?

  1. But EMF’s a everywhere! When I turn on my computer I see about 20 other networks from my neighbors. You can’t away from them so why bother?

You are right that we live in a world with more and more devices than ever before. When you’re ‘out in the world’ it’s nearly impossible not to be exposed to EMF’s. However, most of us spend the majority of our time inside our own homes, and this is the environment we have the most control over.

It’s helpful to understand that you computer has very sensitive technology to pick up on the smallest amount of signals in the area. This is a little bit deceiving as the impact of those signals is likely not as strong as you would suspect. The number one way you can minimize your health risk from EMF exposure is distance. The magnitude of these signals drop off dramatically the further you are from them. So, addressing your own home will significantly reduce your exposure no matter what your neighbors are doing. Reducing the EMF’s in the walls of your own living space will be the most important step you can take.

  1. What do you do during an EMF assessment?

A thorough EMF assessment will generally take about 4 hours depending on the size of the building. For smaller homes or apartments, the time will be less. For larger homes or residential buildings, the time could be significantly more, even several days depending on the state of the structure.

During an EMF assessment, we evaluate four different fields:

  • AC electric fields
  • AC magnetic fields
  • Radio Frequency
  • Microsurge Electrical Pollution (Dirty Electricity)

We use the highest level of professional equipment available to ensure the accuracy of the readings. We assess the entirety of the structure for all four fields, spending extra time in the bedrooms and sleeping areas. Throughout the assessment we help the homeowner understand what the measurements mean and make concrete recommendations about how to mitigate any exposures we find. There are a number of mitigation strategies, and we guide you in identifying which will work best for you. After the assessment, a detailed report of all finding can be requested for a nominal fee.

  1. We want to put an offer on a house, but we’d like and EMF assessment first. How soon can you do an assessment?

I understand the urgency that comes with buying a house. For this reason, I always leave a few appointment times open throughout the week to accommodate this situation. A ‘real estate’ assessment doesn’t take as long a regular assessment does, so I can generally be available within 24 hours to evaluate a home you’re interested in.

  1. You have a unique business; I don’t understand how you can be a Nutritionist and a Building Biologist?

I suffered from my own health challenges for nearly 30 years of life. I quickly found that the traditional medical system could do nothing for me. I knew I had to take responsibility for my own health and learn how to heal myself. I learned so much in those years about how the body works, and how to bring the body back into balance that I knew I had to share this knowledge with others. So in 2014 I became certified as a Holistic Nutritionist.

Though my health was substantially better by then, I still had a few lingering symptoms that I couldn’t get a handle on. The more research I did, the more the signs kept pointing to mold and EMF exposure. I moved out of water-damaged building and decided to get rid of my cell phone and Wi-Fi. Amazingly, I saw these lingering symptoms dramatically improve!   I knew that if I was going to help people with their health problems, I could not ignore the impact the impact of their environment. You can have the best diet in the world, but if you’re sleeping in a ‘sick building’, you’ll never get better. I knew I had to learn as much about this as possible, so I decided to get my training as a Building Biologist in 2017. I found this knowledge to be a critical addition to my services. When people just can’t figure out what’s causing their problems, all of these areas must be addressed.

  1. What can I do to protect myself from EMF’s?

There are four secrets to reducing your EMF exposure. They are:

  • Don’t use devices
  • Minimize time using devices
  • Create distance
  • Shield if needed

As there are four different fields to consider, it would take pages to address each one in complete detail. See this article to learn more about each of these areas. If this is overwhelming to you, contact us so we can simplify it for you. We give 20-minute complimentary consultations to help you put simple steps into place and improve the safety of your environment immediately.

  1. What kind of pendants, necklace, chip, crystal etc., do you recommend to protect me from EMF’s?

The short answer, none. The most impactful thing you can do is reduce your exposure to the four fields mentioned above. However, sometimes we can’t avoid them when we go out in the world, and we understand the desire to have some protection.

There are many products on the market that claim to ‘enhance the bodies own electrical field’ or ‘harmonize the waves’ or a number of other claims. We’re not saying these absolutely don’t work, but because they can’t be measured with our professional meters, we have no way of knowing if they do or not. Some of these devices are surely produced with good intentions, and some are made just to capitalize on the growing awareness of the problem. We have no way of identifying which products might be legitimate and which are nonsense.

Anecdotally, I hear testimonies from clients that xyz pendant was life-saving for her, while another client who tried the exact same pendant felt worse. As everyone is very unique, different products may have different effects, and we have no way of knowing how you might respond to a particular product. So in the end, if you want to spend your money on an ‘EMF Protection’ device, we won’t dissuade you. It’s your money. Maybe it will help, maybe it won’t.
